"The notorious case first came into the public eye in November, 1987, when police officers entered the couple's ....apartmentand found a chaotic scene amidst squalid conditions. Their never-adopted 6 year-old daughter Lisa was dying, their never-adopted younger son Mitchell was urine-soaked and tethered to a playpen, and Nussbaum was found to be battered almost beyond recognition.Lisa died, and on November 2, 1987, the couple were arrested and charged with beating her to death."
